Luna Moth Embroidered Brooch

You may never have seen one. Actias luna lives in the deciduous woodlands of eastern North America, flies only after dark, and is one of the largest moths on the continent: pale green wings, a soft furred body, long trailing tails. Nothing like the tidy symmetry of a butterfly, which is why it converts people who were sure they didn’t like moths. Real ones look fluffy, which is the one thing thread does better than metal or enamel.
Machine embroidered in polyester, then assembled by hand. The wings sit on their own layer, lifting away from the body instead of lying flat, so the whole brooch has depth. It is soft. Hold it and it drapes across your fingers.
Mounted on a black arched card in a black and gold box, fully recyclable, ready to give without wrapping it first.

Description
How to wear it
Slide the butterfly clutch off the back, push the pin through the fabric, click the clutch back on. A jacket lapel, a tote bag, the brim of a hat, a stiff linen shirt. Take it off before the washing machine, it will not enjoy the experience.
Why it moves and our other brooches don’t
Every brooch we make is machine embroidered. On this one the wings are then hand-stitched onto their own layer, sitting above the body and the lower wings. That is what gives it depth, and it is also why it costs more than our flat designs. It stays soft rather than stiff, so pinned to a coat it shifts and folds the way fabric does.
Where the background goes
The moth is embroidered onto a fabric that dissolves in water. After the stitching, the whole thing goes for a rinse and the backing disappears, leaving wings held together by thread alone. It is the reason the brooch is soft rather than stiff. There is a film of it on the video tab of this page. Genuinely satisfying to watch.
Camouflage duty
Tomato sauce down a white blouse? A moth (a real one, considerably less welcome) through your best wool jumper? Pin it over the evidence and nobody is any the wiser. We won’t tell if you don’t.
Looking after it
Remove it before washing or dry cleaning. Keep it in its box between wearings and the layers stay where they should.
